No fewer than thirteen individuals killed and ninety-eight injured in train derailment in Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.

The crash took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine the cause of this incident,” affirmed the country's president.

The president confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The official added plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the immediate past president, whose time in office ended the year before. This rail line was intimately linked to his government's economic agenda for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The development of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a notable increase of its duties in public works. They were built at an accelerated rate, surpassing expectations to be partially launched before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently raised persistent questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an prior accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a major opposition party demanded an urgent pause in the building and running of all similar projects.

This halt was requested pending a full safety audit. The party stated that the loss of life "calls for swift accountability."

In reaction, the president maintained that the train had been operating in complete adherence to all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these national undertakings.
