Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have joined forces with France's air force in a joint strike against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the IS group, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, identified by reconnaissance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was located in hills just north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a number of approach shafts leading to the facility... early reports indicate the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the strike late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as Daesh - imposed extremist governance over significant areas in Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation demonstrates the UK's leading role, and determination to operate in unison with our allies, to eradicate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary said.

RAF aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State following its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank every member of the UK armed forces participating in this operation for their professionalism and their courage," the Defence Secretary commented. "They were part of numerous British personnel on duty over Christmas and New Year. This action, to remove dangerous terrorists who endanger our security, demonstrates how our armed forces are always on standby, all year round, ensuring Britain's security at home and powerful internationally."

During December, the American forces carried out what it described as a "large-scale strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates IS still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
